Australasian Bittern conservation in and around
Manypeaks

Oyster Harbour Catchment Group is working with Birdlife Australia to contribute to the protection and recovery of the Australasian bittern in the Manypeaks area.
Opportunities for Manypeaks landholders
  • Fencing and revegetation of priority wetlands
  • 1080 training, permits and bait subsidies
  • Feral predator control by contractor
  • Wetland appraisal by Birdlife Australia

The endangered Australasian bittern boordenitj (Botaurus poiciloptilus) has been greatly impacted in the past 30 years by the loss of wetlands, climate change, fire and predation by feral animals.
The unique freshwater wetlands of Manypeaks and the Albany sandplain are identified as one of the three most important habitats in WA critical for bittern survival. Protecting and enhancing private wetlands will help to conserve the bittern along with other wetland species.
