Annual Western Ringtail Possum TALLY
The Annual Ringtail Tally citizen science has been conducted in other Possum hotspots since 2016. It returns to our region again in 2025 and Oyster Harbour Catchment Group would love for you to get involved. Running from Sunday 6th April to Saturday 3rd May, the tally involves members of the public counting the number of western ringtail possums they see on any given night in their local patch – this can be a backyard, or a small patch of bush nearby. The tally is conducted across the possum’s range by citizens from Geographe Bay Catchment area, Nature Conservation Margaret River, Leschenault Catchment Council, Wirambi Landcare and our Great Southern, and it helps conservationists understand how the Critically Endangered species is tracking. Hard copies of tally instructions and data sheets will be available from mid March from the Oyster Harbour Catchment Group office (Albany Highway, Mount Barker) and South Coast NRM (88 Stead Road, Centennial Park). Alternatively, a downloadable version is available BELOW. Once completed, the data sheet can be returned by email, mail or hand delivered (further details are provided on the data sheet). We will be holding a free Training Evening on the 5th April in Albany at the Albany Noongar Centre (365 Serpentine Road, Mt Melville) to share the method involved in completing a tally, this will be followed by an optional spotlight walk. Attendance at the workshop is not compulsory to participate in the tally. REGISTER For any further information on the Annual Ringtail Tally or our spotlighting events please email event presenter Hannah ([email protected]). The Annual Ringtail Tally as an initiative of Geocatch, in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
