Regional Estuaries Initiative

Oyster Harbour is one of the six estuaries targeted for investment in the Regional Estuaries Initiative, a $20 million state government program, led by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, to improve the health of our regional estuaries.
Oyster Harbour Catchment Groups Role​
Oyster Harbour Catchment Group is responsible for the implementation of the Regional Estuaries Initiative in the catchment, working in partnership with the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and​ Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. We are delivering on-ground actions through sustainable agriculture and waterway management programs to benefit Oyster Harbour.
Sustainable Agriculture
Reducing nutrient run-off from agricultural activities. Through; 
Nutrient management 
  • soil testing to help farmers to establish effective fertiliser application to save money, improve soils and reduce nutrient run-off.    More info... ​
  • running workshops to help calibrate spreader for precise fertilising. More info or see our upcoming events
Waterway Management
Improving the way water moves through the catchment to improve water quality. Streams will be revegetated and fenced to deter stock.   
Other Local Regional Estuary Initiative Activities  ​
Yakamia Creek Bio-filter Project
​A joint project trying out the new technology, aiming to reduce nutrients entering the estuary from agricultural, industrial and domestic land uses and to improve soil condition for plant growth between Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, South Coast NRM, City of Albany and Oyster Harbour Catchment Group.
Water Quality Monitoring ​
​Department of Water and Environmental Regulation will be carrying out water testing in Oyster Harbour with the aim to develop a world-class catchment and estuary model to inform decisions and guide estuary management.
